Dear Readers, It’s been a while since I last wrote a blog, and so much has changed in my life! I’m excited to announce that I’ll be sharing regular personal updates here—covering my art, creative journey, workshops, and my Master of Research (MRes) in Art & Design, which I started in September 2024. One of the key reasons for undertaking the MRes was to enhance my research skills and critical thinking. My vision is to explore my Bilateral Art Practice which years ago in 2012 I called TwoPenPenny a series whereby I create art using both hands simultaneously. Deciding to narrow in on this as my research focus is a significant step in my creative, research and theoretical journey. I have been making videos where I am exploring different ways to play with bilateral art making. I am also letting this practice interconnect with my personal art crossing over into my lesson planning for workshop as you'll see below. The practice is looping through lots of my work nowadays interweaving like mycelium you'll find here too on my other IG @PenelopeRose_Art which focuses on my RED BLACK WHITE series. I love it when I'm drawing automatically with pen & ink letting it flow out of me, from the subconscious with in a few set parameters, there are a couple videos below with Quink ink and diluted bleach, I made half-way through my first term on the MRes (2024) at Cardiff Metropolitan University, these are quite abstract. I was at a stage in my Research Territories when I was considering my ART & SCIENCE practice as being focus of research. As part of presentations I had been showing some bilateral videos that I use as parts of my creative methods to explore ideas. (I'll share those videos soon... ) When my tutors saw the bilateral art, I think they wondered why I wasn't studying this... You see for a number of reasons I had dismissed it and took it for granted. During the presentation I mentioned one of the reasons, and I'm sure it stems from being an overly sensitive artist. About 10 years ago I took a portfolio of TwoPenPenny artworks depicting a collection of Hares which I had enjoyed drawing with pen and ink. The gallery owner in Cardiff discussed the work with me, but said he would not take them and he thought the process was a 'gimmick'. That made me upset I let it get to me, for years, gnawing away at my confidence in my ability. I explained this to the tutors on the MRes and they were aghast. They said that it wasn't a gimmick at all....Their encouragement was refreshing from an academic interest point of view... but it was still few weeks more weeks until I finally decided that I would look into it more for my research studies as there are some very interesting things about this approach. I won't say what it all is just yet, because well... I forming my research ideas and skills, but I will share the artwork that I'm making and how it is crossing over into all of my work. My Ferndale Run series captures fleeting moments through movement, rhythm, and light. One of the works I’ll be sharing, The Long Run, Chasing My Shadow Home, reflects this experience—running through vast landscapes, feeling small yet in awe of the world around me. After a significant life change, I find myself newly single and temporarily living in the breathtaking Rhondda Cynon Taf. My runs through these mountains and forests have been deeply healing, inspiring new works filled with lightness and possibility.
