Anime Portrait and Profile

Paper, HB Pencil, Putty Rubber and
a Black Fine Liner Pen 0.7
0:09 Remember to pause and play to go
at your own pace.
0:14 Draw a vertical line, mark the line
approximately into 3rd's.
0:19 Draw a horizontal line approximately 2/3's the
length of the vertical line along the top.
0:26 Draw a rectangle.
0:30 Draw an slight arc at point 1/3 and 2/3
0:33 On the left and right side of the first arc at point
1/3, draw a short line slightly angled inwards.
0:36 From the top of the short line draw a dome
to form shape of the head.
0:38 Split the bottom to the 1/3 point section,
into 3rd's. These new points are 9ths of the
first vertical line drawn. At point 1/9 draw a mark on
the left and right beneath the short line just drawn. This is
the jaw line, sketch this in curving inwards towards
0:45 The arc at 1/3 is the bottom edge of the
eyes and ears. Sketch two marks approx. 1/9 above
the arc line, in the middle of the left and right side.
0:52 Sketch a large irises in the shape of horse shoe.
0:55 Sketch a little emphasize for the eye lid
and rim of the eye.
1:00 The nose is just two angled lines on one side of
face at point 2/9 from the bottom of the chin.
1:03 Following the arc at point 1/3, sketch the ears on the
left and right side of the face.
1:06 Just above the eye lid line sketch an arc for the
top of the eye lid. Above these place the arc of
the eyebrow on the arc at point 2/3.
1:10 On the bottom line of the eye lid sketch thick
1:15 Sketch a little arc in the bottom of each iris for
a highlight. Draw an oval for the pupil with the
bottom edge behind the arc of the highlight.
1:18 I have added some shading, but this is
unnecessary as this will be removed.
(I got carried away with my sketching...)
1:30 The mouth is approx. 1/9 from the bottom of the
chin. Mark the corner of the mouth inline with
the inside edge of the irises of the eyes. Sketch
a central line for the lips curving slightly towards
1:34 Sketch the chin with a short horizontal line curving
into the angle of the jaw line.
1:37 Sketch the neck line, approx. inline with the
inside edge of the irises of the eyes.
1:42 Sketch the collar bone like so...
2:00 Sketch a fringe and lose hair flowing round the
face. The hairstyle is with a side pony tail like so...
2:40 Remove marks and guidelines with the putty rubber.
3:26 Before 'inking up' the sketch, lighten the pencil
line by gently lifting the graphite pencil with the
3.46 Using a 0.7 Black Waterproof Fine Liner
or similar, ink up your sketch like so...
4:17 Shading for the eyes is with diagonal hatching
lines. Layered for darker areas, beneath the eye
lid and pupil.
4:25 Allow ink to dry before removing any left over
pencil marks with the putty rubber.
4:31 The Portrait is complete, Well done.
To sketch the profile, match up with
measurements created for the portrait.
Follow the video, sketching along with me,
Pausing when required.
4:46 The ear is approx. on the central vertical line
at 1/3 from the bottom line of the rectangle.
4:53 From approx. 2/9-1/9 sketch a diagonal line from
the back of the of the head to roughly where the
chin will be towards the bottom right
corner of the rectangle.
4:57 Sketch two diagonal lines: 1st sloping inwards
from eyebrows at 2/3 to approx. 1/3.
2nd, from the point of the nose sloping inwards
to the bottom of the chin. Keep both lines the
5:03 Sketch a little circle for the tip of the nose.
Draw the profile as shown using the sketched
diagonal lines as guides. Add 2 short angles
for the dip of the mouth, and the base
of the chin.
5:08 Sketch the eye in, the oval of the iris is contracted.
As are the dimensions for the highlight and pupil.
5:12 Remember to match up the measurements from
5:17 Sketch in the hair, imagining how it looks as
viewed from the side.
5:32 Gently removed the graphite with the putty rubber
to lighten the sketch before 'inking up'.
5:44 Using a 0.7 Black Waterproof Fine Liner
or similar, ink up your sketch like so...
6:03 Allow Ink to dry, then remove any left over
