- Learn layering techniques using acrylics and mixed media to build depth, texture, and atmosphere.
- Explore expressive brushwork, collage, glazing, and impasto to add character and movement.
- Experiment with vibrant colour palettes to capture the energy and symbolism of hares in a meadow.
- Develop your composition skills to create a unique and personal piece.
This workshop combines technical exploration with artistic freedom, providing you with the tools to create a stunning abstract composition while experiencing the meditative joy of creative flow.
Workshop Structure:
Morning:
- Introduction to composition and colour mixing inspired by Graham Bannister’s photography.
- Demonstrations on using brushes, palette knives, and mixed media techniques like texture paste, impasto gel, and collage.
- Explore layering techniques to create expressive movement and dynamic effects.
- Plan your artwork with a ‘plot drawing’ on paper, selecting your own colour palette and composition.
- Begin your canvas work, building layers with collage and acrylic mediums.
- Work independently with one-to-one guidance from the tutor to complete your unique abstract hares in the meadow composition.
Recommended Materials:General Supplies:
- HB Pencil and Rubber
- Sketch Paper/Book (A4 or A3, 130gsm-170gsm)
- Primed Medium-Sized Canvas (e.g., 14" x 18", square or rectangular)
- Palette Knives (available to borrow if needed)
- Brushes: Small, medium, large, round, flat, bristle, and synthetic for acrylics (some will also be available to borrow)
- 2 Jars for water
- Wet Palette Tray (e.g., a shallow Tupperware container with kitchen roll and greaseproof paper)
Collage Materials:
Tissue paper, string, scrap paper, and recycled packaging. A selection will also be provided.
Paints: (if you don't have them all, do not worry, I'll have some you can share, just bring what you have)
- Essential Colours: Titanium White, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Viridian Green, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, and Primary Red.
- Optional Colours: Phthalo Blue, Turquoise, Violet, Magenta, Cerulean, and any other colours you enjoy.
- Texture Paste
- Glazing Medium
- Impasto Gel (These will also be provided to share if you don’t have your own.)
