Getting into the 'Creative Flow':Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Rhondda Valley through an expressive, abstract landscape painting. This workshop combines artistic freedom with practical techniques to help you create vibrant and textured compositions inspired by the rich colours, shapes, and textures of the Welsh valleys.

Optional Colours: Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Magenta, Alizarin Crimson, Turquoise, Cerulean, Violet, and other personal favourites.

Getting into the 'Creative Flow':Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Rhondda Valley through an expressive, abstract landscape painting. This workshop combines artistic freedom with practical techniques to help you create vibrant and textured compositions inspired by the rich colours, shapes, and textures of the Welsh valleys.
We will take inspiration from the work of:
- Mary Lloyd Jones, known for her expressive landscape sketches and paintings.
- Kate Bell, a contemporary artist based in Swansea, celebrated for her vibrant, abstract interpretations of the Gower landscape.
- Use collage materials and acrylic mediums to add depth and texture.
- Apply techniques such as block and blend, wet-in-wet, impasto, and splattering to create dynamic effects.
- Explore composition and colour mixing, focusing on the earthy and vibrant tones of the valleys.
- Introduction and Demonstrations: Learn about abstract composition, working with reference materials, and exploring expressive colours inspired by the Rhondda Valley.
- Experimentation: Use tools such as brushes, palette knives, acrylic paints, and mediums like texture paste and impasto gel.
- Layering Techniques: Build layers to create movement, atmosphere, and texture in your landscape.
- Independent Work: Start your canvas work, guided by the tutor, with opportunities for feedback to achieve your desired outcome.
Recommended Materials:
- HB Pencil and Rubber
- Sketch Paper/Book (A4 or A3, 130gsm-170gsm)
- Primed Medium-Sized Canvas (e.g., 14" x 18", square or rectangular)
- Palette Knives (available to borrow if needed)
- A Range of Brushes (small, medium, large, round, flat, bristle, and synthetic for acrylics – some will also be available to borrow)
- 2 Jars for Water
- Wet Palette Tray (e.g., a shallow Tupperware container with kitchen roll and greaseproof paper)
- Tissue Paper, scrap paper, string, and recycled packaging. A selection will also be available to share.
