Penelope Rose Double-Handed Art
I am based in Cardiff, Wales, UK. I have been here since 1998 and have been making art or tutoring it since. My designs explore a range of meditative, decorative, nature, and animal themes, to make these I draw with both hands simultaneously to with pen and ink.
Whatever it is I am creating this way has an almost symmetrical feel to it because when I draw with both hands, my right hand likes to mirror what my left hand is doing. I am addicted to making art and designs this way, I love it.
How the Double-Handed Art began-
I have been creating this style of work since 2013. It began following a discussion with Prof. Derek Jones Director of CUBRIC (Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre). I had just started working with Jones with regards to an Art and Science art project to do with MRI scanners and neuroscientific research which became the project NEW SIGNALS.
In the early days we had conversations about many things to do with CUBRIC's research about the scanners and the brain. In one discussion Jones expressed some of his thoughts regarding neuroplasticity, of how the brain is mouldable and that axons of neural pathways can be strengthen or weaken through more use or lack off use. With thicker pathways transmitting signals more easily. Jones expressed that axons can be strengthen or reawaken even those have not been used since childhood.
This triggered a memory of when I broke my arm when I was nine and learnt to write with my non-dominate right hand. I asked Jones if it is possible for me to write again with my right hand. He believed it would be more than possible. Shortly after his conversation I began exploring and reawakening those old axons. I found that yes, I could, I also found myself discovering that I was able to draw with both hands simultaneously! Which led to my double-handed art.
