About this course

A course for a ‘a little bit of everything’ suitable for all levels of ability with gradual and complete instructions every step of the way for each project.

An average of 5 themes will be covered over the 10 weeks course. We may fit a few more in if we have time.

The course will cover practices using various media i.e. pencil, charcoal, watercolours, acrylics, pen and ink that vary from term to term.

You will be sent regular information via email for the medium and theme, prior to each project.

Each project will begin with a drawing and exploring techniques session to prepare you for creating the artwork theme for the project.

The session will then continue with step-by-step instructions, to be followed by you. There will be time to create and reflect on your progress, with the me your tutor and each other.

Materials

(See products below for suggestions from Amazon or click the underlined for Jacksons Art product suggestions)
  • Hair dryer or heat tool
  • Heavy Gesso (see amazon produc link below)
  • Sketch pad
  • Selection of HB pencils (For drawings for watercolour you mainly need just the HB pencil)
  • Pencil sharpener
  • From Jackson's Art - Charcoal
  • Faber Castell Putty Rubber in a case
  • A set of Watercolours pans or tubes i.e: Good Value Medium Quality Watercolout Tubes  or for a better quality Winsor & Newton colours required are listed below.
  • Beginners Set- Small, medium and large, round, flat and a Fan Brush for watercolours / acrylics.
  • Good Value Paint Brushes for Watercolour and Acrylics with  Palettes
  • Set of 3 Palettes for Watercolour
  • Good Value Acrylic Paints by Royal & Langnickel
  • For a wide selection of more profession brushes go to Jackson's Art, especially for acrylics and oils
  • Palette for Oil or Acrylic (a white ceramic plate will do which is what I use)
  • 2 jars, kitchen towel and masking tape
  • Lightweight Drawing Board
  • An easel (optional)
  • White Gouache
  • Wax Resist Crayons
  • Masking Fluid
  • Watercolour pad 300 gsm
  • Acrylic Pad
  • Pen's for line work only - from Jackson's Art Faber Castell : Pitt Artists Brush Pen : Set of 8 : Assorted Black Nibs (Personally I prefer a dip pen and ink, as I can do both line and brush work with these, where as I can only create line work with the pens which is great for these studies Hares  and the The Bothy Cottage)
  • Waterproof set of Pen and Ink or Dip Pen and Ink, I use Talens Indian Ink.
  • Non-Waterproof Parker Quink Ink (The non-waterproof ink is good for when working washes and with bleach, for example see the Cheetah Page)
  • Soft Pastel

Recommended colours list:

Basic Watercolours - Cadmium Red, Alizarine Crimson, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Sap Green, Viridian Green, Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue,

Basic Acrylic – Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White and a (smaller sized) French Ultramarine.

Additional Colours –  Permanent Rose, Opera pink, Violet, ….the list is extensive so it’s nice to pick a few random extras of your choosing as time goes on to add to your collection.

Recommendations from Amazon.

Links prodived for the art materials are my recommendations for their good value, quantity and/or quality ~ For example I will purchase an A2 Acrylic pad with 20 sheets because it better value than 12 A4 sheets. I cut down the sheets to A4 as required. However, I will purchase a good quality, Winsor and Newton White Gouache due to the higher pigment content for better opacity when highlighting on top of a watercolour painting.
Visit my YouTube channel to see the art in progress. Many quick hyperlasped paintings in a variety of mediums that I use to accompany the tuition for art courses and classes.
As an Amazon and Jackson's Art Associate I earn commissions from qualifying purchases on this page.
